On behalf of the Department of Ophthalmology at Queen's University, welcome to the Undergraduate section of our website.
It is with great enthusiasm that I invite you to explore the Undergraduate Program in our Department. We have lots to offer, and are currently working on improvements that will hopefully enhance the learning of ophthalmology for all.
We provide Core Undergraduate Teaching which include didactic lectures in the classroom to the 2nd year Queen's students, as well as hands-on clinical skills sessions to 1st and 2nd year students. Watch for our Ophthalmology Clinical Skills Fair, which takes place in November. This is an interactive clinical session for second year medical students with the Department of Ophthalmology. It is held on one afternooon, dividing the class into several small groups who rotate through six specific stations designed to teach the clinical skills necessary to perform a basic ocular examination. This is followed up with patients who have observable findings in Phase IIC.
We also invite Undergraduate students and Postgraduate residents to participate in observerships and electives in our department. These can be for students interested in pursuing an ophthalmology residency, or for those who would like to learn and practice their ophthalmology clinical skills. For the former, we provide a rotation through the various subspecialty clinics which allows you an opportunity to explore the various areas of ophthalmology, as well as the occasion to meet our attending staff and residents. You get a very good idea of what a residency position at Queen's would be like. For those interesting in learning more ophthalmology and a chance to practice various clinical skills, arrangements are made for a rotation through our busy and interesting Emergency Eye clinic.
We have a few special awards for Queen's undergraduate medical students in Ophthalmology. Please click on the links to learn more about them: their eligibility criteria, past recipients, and the award itself.
We hope to teach you the essentials of ophthalmology for every day practice, as well as peak your interest to want to learn more about ophthalmology. Please explore our website for more information on the programs we offer. Should you be unable to find what you are looking for, have questions about anything contained in the Undergraduate portion of this website, or have further unanswered questions, please contact me at: baxters@queensu.ca.
